Divorce Mortgage
Going through a divorce?
You do not have to figure out the mortgage alone.
Divorce is one of the most financially complex events of a person's life. The family home is often the largest shared asset — and deciding what to do with it is one of the most consequential decisions you will make.
I have been there myself. I navigated the same fear and uncertainty my clients face. That experience, combined with over 30 years of mortgage expertise, is why I am uniquely positioned to help you through this.
What I help divorcing clients with
Spousal buyouts — qualifying on your own income
Understanding your options before you agree to anything
Refinancing joint property to remove a spouse
Selling the matrimonial home and buying separately
Rebuilding your credit and qualifying after separation
Coordinating with your family lawyer and financial advisor
Navigating the emotional and financial complexity with care
Can I buy out my spouse and keep the house?
In many cases, yes — but you need to qualify for the mortgage on your own income. This is where many people get stuck. I will assess your financial situation honestly, tell you exactly what you qualify for, and help you build a plan to get there if you are not quite there yet.
What happens to the mortgage if we sell the home?
When you sell, the mortgage is discharged from the proceeds. If there is a prepayment penalty for breaking the mortgage early, that comes out of the sale proceeds as well. I will help you understand exactly what the financial outcome of selling looks like before you make any decisions.
How do I qualify for a mortgage on a single income?
It depends on your income, your debt load, and the price of the home you are trying to qualify for. I will run a full assessment of your financial picture and tell you exactly what you qualify for today — and what steps would help you qualify for more.
Do I need a lawyer to handle the mortgage side of my divorce?
You need a family lawyer to handle the legal side of your separation agreement. But the mortgage piece — the buyout, the refinance, the new application — that is my expertise. I work alongside your lawyer to make sure the financial and legal pieces align.
